Two Sides of the Internet
The Internet has become more and more popular. Many people sayings: that the Internet is important for all of us, or that the Internet is bad for people’s lives. My opinion is that the Internet is just a tool. As the Nicole Zillien said “The Internet cannot be assumed to be ‘inherently good or inherently bad. Of course, to complicate matters, neither is the Internet neutral’” (Zillien 274). The problem is the people who use the Internet. It is connected with a word, which is “Convenient.” Most people use Internet because it is easy to shop, talk, and even read online, but some people use their special skills to steal others’ money and personal information via the Internet.

Nowadays, business has already relayed on the Internet more and more. The Internet has taken part in many areas, particularly in communication Because of it is faster and easier to transmit information. The Internet has become crucial for the economic activities (Blank).

As we know, the Internet is an important marketing and advertising tool for businesses. We always see a lot of advertising windows pop up when we browse certain websites. I think everyone knows eBay, a famous shopping website online. Millions of people shop on eBay every single day and there are innumerable goods on eBay. People even can buy virtual goods on eBay such as the currency in a popular Internet game. I call it “if there’s need, then there’s supply.” According to Chris Blank’s article Why the Internet Is Important in Business, although people can use the telephone to communicate, many businesses are using email to contact instead, such as sending chart or forms. Many companies communicate with each other by using email and message. They also may use interne telephone such as Skype, and even virtual meetings.

Also the Interne participated in health and government services. There are about eighty-eight percent of internet users searching for this kind of information. To spread health and medical information, electronic media plays a significant role. It is faster than textbooks for years (Mars 34). National Telecommunications and Information Administration reported in 1999 only about 30% of countryside Americans owned a computer and 20% of them installed the Internet which is far behind the national average. Eleven years later, the Internet usage changed swiftly. It increased in American households from 25% of the population to more than 50% from 1999 to2004 (Mars 34).

As we see before, the Internet plays a crucial role in communication. Some scholars have researched about online networking in 2005. The result showed that ninety percent of college students took part in a online social network community, such as Facebook, MySpace, and Friendster. Many students opened their personal information (Ellison, Steinfield and Lampe 3). Facebook is a very popular website that allows people contact each other easily and make friends quickly. Facebook was created in February 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg, a student at Harvard University. “Facebook has more than 7.5 million registered members at over 2,000 U.S. colleges and is the seventh-most-popular site on the entire Web with respect to total page views” (Ellison, Steinfield and Lampe 2). Similarly, we also have Myspace, Twitter, and Youtube. Most people know about hose website especially for teenagers and college students. The Internet has therefore made our earth into a Global Village. People from thousands of miles away can talk to and see each other online through webcams. It really makes people from all over the world closer.

We can do business, talk, and make friends online. We also can study online.

Based on my personal experience, I am taking ENG 201 and we don’t have to write journals and turn them in. Our professor gave us a blog and just let us post our assignments on the blog every day, so he only needs to check everyone’s blog. He will leave the messages on the blog showing what are today’s assignments and what will we do tomorrow. I think this is much more convenient and simple. We don’t have to write tons of papers to hand in. Instead, we just need to move our fingers and type the words on blog. Last semester, I took a CIS (Computer information System) class. It was a totally online class. The instructor didn’t even need to teach. Everything was online; we just log on the website that he gave us, and follow the programs on that website. It automatically will show you how to use the Microsoft software. The assignments are simple, and we can do it home or at school anytime.

The Internet has positive affection. Also, it has negative influences and uses, for example, the Internet addiction, identity theft and hack into others’ computer.

Internet addiction is a very hot topic these years. Internet usage keeps increasing, and some people end up over-using the Internet. To understand online gaming addiction, it is important to understand how the addiction from the creation of virtual worlds. New studies have shown that immersion into online games allows users to become addicted. Kimberly Young mentions this in his article Understanding Online Gaming Addiction and Treatment Issues for Adolescents - The American Journal of Family Therapy: “In one of the most dramatic stories of online gaming addiction, in August 2005, a 28-year-old South Korean man died—not by committing suicide, but after playing the game StarCraft at an Internet café for 50 hours straight” (357-358). According to the article Internet Addiction: Signs, Symptoms, Treatment, and Self-Help, there are four signs and symptoms of internet addiction or computer addiction. Losing track of time online as you finding yourself on the Internet longer than you thought; having trouble finishing tasks at work or home, such as working late more and more but still can’t complete the work on time; isolation from family and your real-life friends; and feeling guilty or defensive about your Internet use and hiding your internet use or lie about how much time you spend online.

Pornography sites are full of Internet. People are easy to get on those websites without any limitation especially for the children. The pornography sites have much more visitors than the three famous search website: Google, MSN, and Yahoo (Paul and Jae 187). Because of the Internet is so convenient, so there must be a limitation to prevent people to overuse this “convenient.” People just need to type the keywords that they want to see on the Internet, or they just log on the particular websites because they know they will find the pictures or information that they want to know (Paul and Jae 188). If the children can easily find pornographic pictures online, they might get addict to it and have negative effect on the mind.

Identity theft is a very common crime in this informationalized world. It is not like normal theft by sneaking into building and took other’s staffs without catching attention. What is identity theft? It’s a crime obviously. People steal other people’s personal information from the Internet and use it to get people’s credit card or steal other property. “This is a common ploy for ID thieves, who test out your credit card with a small charge and then, if it goes through, start making big purchases. Crooks may even use programs with algorithms that run 16-digit numbers until they get a hit.” (Kimberly, Lankford 1). After they get your information, they may call you as a company and try to fraud you to purchase or to pay back bills that you don’t even know. When you doubt the bills, they will pull out your information and try to convince you they are a legal company. Right after they get your trust, and your money, they will vanish forever.

Hackers are known for everyone. They can use professional programs to hack into your computer through its security loopholes, and you don’t even realize that everything in your computer is exposed before their eyes. The common software that they use is called a Trojan injector. The principle behind it is similar to the Trojan horse in Greek history. That’s where its name comes from. The Trojan can disguise itself as a safe program and go through the firewall. After it goes into your computer, it well releases many viruses to break down your security system. Honestly, I have used those programs which can go into others’ system before. I use them just for fun to joke with my friends, and I know what they can do, trust me. After the hacker gets the permission to access your computer, he can control everything. To turn off the computer or format hard disk is no longer an “impossible.” To be a hacker requires much knowledge about the Internet and software. So people who are hackers are not idiots; they are smarter than you think.
The Internet is like a double-edge sword. It can give incredible wealth to people, and give many convenient such as put all people who use Internet on this earth closer. But it can also bring disasters to people. Some people lost millions dollars and some people got in troubles because their personal information was used for doing things that are illegal. Therefore, it depends on how people are going to use it. We can’t blame a knife because someone used it to hurt people. We should see it in an equal light. Hopefully, people will understand the Internet and use it to make positive contributions for the world.

Two sides of the Internet

Internet has become more and more popular. I heard many issues that said the Internet is important for all of us, but some people said the Internet is bad for people’s life. My opinion is the Internet is just a tool. There is no good or bad for the Internet as a tool. The problem is the people who use the Internet. I think it connects a word, which is “Convenient.” Most people use Internet because it is easy to shopping online, talking online, even reading online, but some people using special skills to steal others money and personal information by using Internet.

As the 21st century continues, it becomes more and more difficult to imagine how business can be conducted without the Internet. The Internet has participated in many areas of the business arena, especially communication. It provides a fast and easy way to transmit information over long distance. The Internet has become indispensable for the economic activities (Blank)

As we know, the Internet is an essential marketing and advertising tool for businesses. We always seeing there are a lot of advertising windows popped up when we were browsing some websites. I think everyone knows a famous shopping website online called EBay. Millions of people shopping on EBay every single day and there are innumerable goods on EBay. People even can buy virtual goods on EBay such as the currency in a popular Internet game. I call it “there’s need, then there’s supply.” According to Chris Blank’s article Why the Internet Is Important in Business? Although people can use telephone to communicate, much business are using email to contact, such as sending chart or forms. Many companies communicate with the public and to transmit messages within the company by using email. They also use instant messaging, internet telephony (through services such as Skype) and even virtual meetings.

Facebook is a very popular website that allows people contact each other easily and make friends quickly. Facebook was created in February 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg, a student at Harvard University. According to Zuckerberg, “The idea for the website was motivated by a social need at Harvard to be able to identify people in other residential houses. Facebook has more than 7.5 million registered members at over 2,000 U.S. colleges and is the seventh-most-popular site on the entire Web with respect to total page views (Ellison, Steinfield and Lampe 2). The similar thing with Facebook we also have Myspace, Twitter and Youtube. I don’t see any people that don’t know these kinds of websites. Therefore, Internet made our earth become a Global Village. People from thousands mails away can talk and see each other online through the web cam. It really makes people from all over the world closer.

We can do business online, talk and make friends online. We also can study online.

Based on my personal experience, I am taking ENG 201 and we don’t have to writer journal and turn it in. Our professor gave us a blog web site and just let us post our assignments on the blog everyday so he only needs to check everyone’s blog. He will leave the messages on the blog showing what are today’s assignments and what will we do tomorrow. I think this is much more convenient and simple. We don’t have to write tones of paper to hand in. Instead, we just need to move our finger and type the words on blog, then we finished. Last semester, I took CIS (Computer information System). It was totally online class. The instructor didn’t even need to teach. Everything was online; we just log on the website that he gave us, and follow the programs on that website. It automatically will show you how to do the Microsoft ware. The assignments are simply easy, we can do it home or at school on anytime. Don’t you think that was so relax? I do.

I have summed up some main positive usages on the Internet. Next, I will talk about the negative effect of the Internet.

Internet addiction is a very hot topic these years. Based on the Internet usage keep increasing, some people over used Internet. To understand online gaming addiction, it is important to understand howthe addiction stems from the creation of virtual worlds. New studies have shown that immersion into online games allows users to become addicted. Kimberly Young mentioned in his article Understanding Online Gaming Addiction and Treatment Issues for Adolescents - The American Journal of Family Therapy, “In one of the most dramatic stories of online gaming addiction, in August 2005, a 28-year-old South Korean man died—not by committing suicide, but after playing the game StarCraft at an Internet caf´e for 50 hours straight” (357-358). According to the article Internet Addiction: Signs, Symptoms, Treatment, and Self-Help there are four signs and symptoms of internet addiction or computer addiction. Losing track of time online, find yourself on the Internet longer than you thought. Having trouble completing tasks at work or home, such as working late more and more but still can’t complete the work on time. Isolation from family and friends, such as you feeling no one in real life. Felling guilty or defensive about your Internet use, hide your internet use or lie about how much time you spend online.

Identity theft is a very common crime in this informationized world. What is Identity theft? It’s a crime that someone steals people’s personal information from Internet and uses it to get people’s credit card or steal other property. “This is a common ploy for ID thieves, who test out your credit card with a small charge and then, if it goes through, start making big purchases. Crooks may even use programs with algorithms that run 16-digit numbers until they get a hit.” (Kimberly, Lankford 1). After they got your information, they may call you as a company and try to fraud you to purchase or to payback bills that you don’t even know. When you doubt the bills, they will pull out your information and try to convince you they are legal company. Right after they get your trust, and your purchase, they will vanish forever.

I think everyone all heard about hacker. They can use professional programs to hack into your computer through the security holes and you don’t even realize that everything in your computer is exposed to their eyes. The common software that they use is called Troy injection. The principle behind it is similar to the story called Troy. So that’s what its name came from. The Troy can prevent itself as a safe program and go through the firewall. After it goes into your computer, it well releases many viruses to break down your security system. Then the hacker can get permission to connect to your computer and control everything. To be a hacker requires much knowledge about Internet and software. So people who are hacker are not idiot, they are smarter than you think.
To warp those things up, my point is to inform that the Internet is like a double-edge sword. As we saw in my paper, it can give incredible wealth to people; also it can bring disasters to people. It depends on how people are going to use it, such as we can’t blame on a knife because someone used it to hurt people. We should see it equally and fairly. Hopefully, people will understand the Internet and use it to make contribution for the world.

.Actually my purpose stays the same. I’m going to talk about the two sides of the Internet usage. Those are the two main points of my paper. To specific, I came up with several points about each side, which are some people use internet to do business, to make money; or to make more friends online; students also can study online, they can find many books. I found out that many articles that about the Internet marketing, which means people are buying products online. But some other people, they use internet to get personal information illegally; they also can steal money online, and do many things to get advantages for themselves; some students play Internet game too much and they don’t want to study anymore. I read an article that said there are millions of people in the world lost their personal information in a single one day. I also read a paper that said a 19 years old kid obsessed Internet game and almost quit his collage. That’s why many parents hate Internet so much because their kids obsessed Internet too much.

I’ll focus on explain it is the problem about people who are using the internet, not the problem about internet itself. Different people can make huge difference by using internet. So internet is just a tool, it doesn’t have any problem. I’ll give some examples about what exactly different between two kind of people use the internet.

My thesis will be the Internet is like a double-edge sword, when you are using it, you may get hurt by someone else online.

"Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to recount a disastrous result from a computer virus infection. A proposed quarantine scheme to combat malicious activity is discussed, as well as several issues bearing on internet freedom, including illegal music copying, politically motivated censorship and censorship of offensive material. Reference is made to an initiative to establish international Ackoff Centers for Design Thinking, following a suggestion by the late Russell Ackoff. Design/methodology/approach - The aim is to review developments on the internet, especially those of general cybernetic interest. Findings - Internet freedom is a complex issue, with practical, political and social implications. Practical implications - Maintaining virus protection is important for all computer users. The proposed quarantine scheme has much to commend it, but the thorny issue of internet freedom needs careful consideration. Originality/value - It is hoped this is a valuable periodic review." I can take some examples about the what bad things can people do by using the Internet.

"The Internet has spawned blogs, microblogs, podcasts, and YouTube and social networking sites, and people can even simply establish their own website. This is both egalitarian and immediate: everyone is a potential journalist and publisher. Some of the result of the explosion in new media is great, but much is tedious, obsessive, phoney, irrelevant, ill considered, and insulating. Here, Spence focuses on new media and medicine. He also stresses that the new media are a good thing, because in the past history was written by the privileged few. The new media in all their guises are at least the diary of the people. They offer writing therapy to doctors and the opportunity to upload a different version of the official sanitized version of the NHS." Examples about how people socialized on internet.

It notes that the Minnetonka, Minnesota public schools have used technology funding to expand their communications range to websites, podcasts and video, and is developing a plan for strategic use of social media technology. It points out that officials learned from online conversations regarding the resignation of a school administrator that people assumed that student conduct was the reason for the resignation. They were able to post a response on the website where the comments were found to address inaccuracies. It notes that engaging in such activities requires a plan with a careful delineation of personnel involved." There's many ways to use social network on Internet.

"This purpose of this paper it to examine the historical forces shaping the new paradigm and the possible directions in which the new commercial Internet might evolve. The Internet is undergoing a major paradigm shift. The factors influencing this shift, the commercial models that are emerging, and the resulting constraints that accompany these models are deeply rooted in the history of the Internet. The Internet has been the incubator for new network technologies, far surpassing the expectations of worldwide network suppliers. Its growth has been the steepest shortly after new technology has been deployed and new applications executed. Two basic reasons underlie the Internet's success: the Internet satisfies the needs of its users and its technologies were developed by solving real problems. The Internet is unique, and concepts cannot be readily borrowed from other business situations and applied to the Internet without risking adverse consequences on its effectiveness and utility. The key issues of the commercial Internet's future, such as management of the boundaries between networks, the establishment of an environment that fosters continued rapid technological progress, and the carrots-and-sticks imposed by the funding sources will be critical factors in its success." This is very good source I think. It tells me the progression of the Internet business. I can use many sources in this article to support my point which is internet is so important for people's life.
